Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation awarded $150,000 in grants to nurses at six hospitals and universities throughout the United States for pediatric cancer research. Recipients are: Verna Hendricks-Ferguson of Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri, for “Palliative Care and End-of-Life Communication Experiences of Pediatric Oncology Nurses”; Rosanna Pollack and Cynthia J. Schmus of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania, for “A Comparison of Parent and Clinician Reported Toxicities in Standard Radiation Versus Proton Beam Radiation in Children With Posterior Fossa Tumors”; Eufemia Jacob of Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, for “Pain and Symptom Experiences in Children With Cancer”; Pamela S. Hinds of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, for “Testing a Hospital Sleep Hygiene Intervention”; Cheryl Rodgers of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, for “The Meaning of Adolescents’ Eating Experiences During Bone Marrow Transplant Recovery”; Kristin Stegenga of The Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, for “Exploring the Impact of a Teen Weekend on the Quality of Life of the Adolescent With Cancer: A Qualitative, Case/Control Study”; and Elizabeth Ely of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, for “Factors Influencing the Decision to Provide General Anesthesia or Moderate Sedation for Treatment Related Procedures in Children With Cancer.” The foundation was founded by Alexandra Scott to help find a cure for childhood cancer, the disease that took her life in 2004. The foundation has raised more than $16 million for childhood cancer research.

Cynthia Dobmeyer-Dittrich of University Urology in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, received the President’s Trophy from the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates for outstanding contributions to the organization. Dobmeyer-Dittrich, Fran Foley and Marie Page were among members of an “Ask the Experts” panel discussion at the organization’s annual conference in October. Topics of discussion included operating room instrumentation, bladder cancer and nerve stimulation, and an update from the International Continence Society.

Lucille S. Eller, associate professor at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey College of Nursing, USA, is principal investigator for the college’s subcontract of the New York/New Jersey AIDS Education Training Center Project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. She is providing workshops on topics in HIV/AIDS to nurses in New Jersey. Her research and clinical experience include symptom management in HIV/AIDS and cancer, cognitive-behavioral interventions and immune response to acute pain.

Suzanne Gordon, journalist and author, lectured on media coverage of health care at the University of North Carolina, USA. For the past 20 years, Gordon has been observing nurses and other caregivers in health care institutions and writing about caregiving and health care reform issues. She is the author of five books, co-editor of four others and co-author, with Bernice Buresh, of From Silence to Voice: What Nurses Know and Must Communicate to the Public (Cornell University Press). The book won an American Journal of Nursing Best Book of the Year Award in 2000. Her most recent book, Nursing Against the Odds, was also published by Cornell. Gordon is currently writing a book, The Perfect Number, about staffing ratios in California and Australia.

Hook and Shana Winchel have received the 2007 MEDSURG Nursing Clinical Scholarship/Best Practice Award for their article, “Fall-Related Injuries in Acute Care: Reducing the Risk of Harm,” published in the December 2006 issue. Hook is a research associate at Aurora Health Care Center for Nursing Research & Practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Winchel is a patient care manager at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee.

Linda M. Janelli, Deborah Stamps and LyLy Delles have received the 2007 MEDSURG Nursing Research for Practice Award for their article, “Physical Restraint Use: A Nursing Perspective,” published in the June 2006 issue. Janelli is professor and director of the GNP Program at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, USA. Stamps is director of nursing, Emergency Services, Women’s Neonatal Health and Bed Coordination, and Delles is a medical unit nurse manager at Rochester General Hospital in New York.

Rachel Jones, assistant professor at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey College of Nursing, USA, has received The New York Times Tribute to Nurses Award for nurse educators and also the Rutgers-Newark Provost’s Award for Community Engagement in Research. Her research areas include HIV sexual risk behaviors in young urban women and use of multimedia computer technology to enhance culturally based health promotion. Jones and her staff have completed filming and testing a series of video vignettes designed to reduce HIV sexual risk behavior in young urban women. Angela Joseph, San Diego Veterans Affairs Health System in San Diego, California, USA, received the Outstanding Contributions in Continence Care Award from the National Association for Continence. The award was presented in October during the annual conference of the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates.

Ani Kalayjian, president of the Association for Trauma Outreach & Prevention, member of the board of directors for the United Nations NGO Human Rights Committee and adjunct professor of psychology at Fordham University, received the 2007 Mentoring Award from the American Psychological Association International Division, presented annually to a member who plays an exceptional mentoring role in an international context. Kalayjian chairs the APA International Division’s Mentoring Committee.

Laurie Kennedy-Malone, nursing professor at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), USA, has been named Geriatric Nursing Faculty Champion by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), in collaboration with the John A. Hartford Foundation Institute for Geriatric Nursing and New York University. A nurse educator at UNCG since 1990, Kennedy-Malone has served as program director of the adult/gerontological nurse practitioner concentration since 1992. More than 200 gerontological nurse practitioners have graduated from the program. She was nominated for the award by her peers for her consistent dedication and expertise. Kennedy-Malone served as a member of AACN’s Advanced Gerontological Nursing National Expert Panel and the John A. Hartford Foundation. She participated in the development of the AACN Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist Competencies for Older Adult Care. She currently is a member of AACN’s Creating Careers Advisory Panel and is a co-author of Management Guidelines for Nurse Practitioners Caring for Older Adults.
