The art of nursing is in the keen observation that
detects subtle changes,
identifies their importance
and initiates immediate action.
It is a calm demeanor in the midst of emergencies,
delegating priorities.
It is motivating without forcing,
encouraging without providing false hope.
It is treating without judging,
educating without overwhelming.
The art of nursing is demonstrating patience
in spite of time constraints.
It is accepting, not necessarily agreeing.
The art of nursing is the act of distracting with
conversation,
while concentrating on intervention.
It is in advocating without attacking,
reassuring without belittling.
It is in recognizing that caring is about healing,
not necessarily curing.
The art of nursing is in every interaction we have
with our patients, their families,
and all other medical professionals we encounter.
It is in our communication, our interventions,
and the flexibility we allow
so that each patient is seen as an individual
with specific needs.
The art of nursing is in its humanity.

Author's note: “The poem explores many of the subtle ways bedside nurses practice the art of our profession,” writes the author. “As a painter, I have always looked to find a connection between the nursing profession and the arts. I feel nursing consists of more than technical skill. There are many other, often difficult to articulate, attributes. This poem explores these qualities.” |
