More than a century ago ...
Nurses aid Japanese soldiers wounded during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), a conflict that arose over rivalry for dominance in Korea and Manchuria. After heavy casualties on both sides, the naval Battle of Tshushima brought the Russian government to the peace table. Japan thus became the first Asian power in modern times to defeat a European power.
